course description
The Art of the Graphic Novel is a course for young artists, storytellers, visual learners, and graphic novel fanatics. This image-based storytelling lab will bring aspiring artists into an exciting community of all levels of writing and drawing experience. Young artists will learn the language of professional writers and illustrators, including the styles specific to manga, comics, graphic novels, and graphic memoirs, and they will learn tricks of the trade like incorporating exciting sound effects and dialogue, world-building through intentional background panels, and conveying mood.
Visiting guest experts and artists of the day will inspire young artists to develop their own styles, hear stories about what it’s like to publish a story, and explore a future career pathway. Incorporating the techniques learned from these real-world graphic novelists, students will work with their instructors and classmates to develop and create an original six-panel comic strip.
